Osun Guber: ADC candidate unveils manifesto, promises transformation

Published

The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, in Osun, Dr Najeem Folasayo Salaam, has said his administration, if elected, would prioritise workers’ welfare, pensioners’ wellbeing, agricultural development, youth empowerment, quality healthcare, education and investment promotion.

Salaam, who made this revelation while unveiling his manifesto for the 2026 Osun governorship election on Monday in Osogbo, pledged to restore trust in government, rebuild the state’s economy and empower citizens through inclusive governance.

Speaking at the presentation of the manifesto at the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Press Centre, Salaam described the occasion as the beginning of a new vision for Osun State and called on residents to embrace what he termed a path of transformation.

He said Osun stood at a critical point in its history, noting that decisions taken now would shape the future of generations to come.

“We gather here not merely to witness the unveiling of a manifesto, but to participate in the birth of a new vision for our beloved state. The time has come to rise together and build a future of greatness, opportunity, peace, and prosperity,” Salaam said.

The ADC candidate acknowledged the state’s rich agricultural resources, cultural heritage and economic potential but noted that many residents continued to face challenges including unemployment, inadequate infrastructure, insecurity and limited economic opportunities.

According to him, “the challenge confronting the state is not a lack of potential but the need for purposeful leadership, strategic planning and responsible governance to unlock available opportunities.

“A state where workers and pensioners are valued, respected, and prioritised; a state where our farmers are supported and agriculture becomes a major driver of economic prosperity; a state where our youths are empowered with skills, jobs, and opportunities to thrive,” he said while outlining his vision.

The former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly also identified electricity as a key driver of economic growth, promising to pursue policies aimed at improving power generation and supply across the state.

“No society can attain sustainable development without a strong economic foundation. And no economy grows without electricity. Through strategic investments, alternative energy solutions and effective public-private partnerships, we shall work tirelessly to provide reliable power infrastructure,” he stated.

He argued that improved electricity supply would stimulate industrial growth, attract investors and create employment opportunities, adding that economic prosperity would follow increased industrial activities.

Salaam described the manifesto as a product of consultations and engagements with residents, saying it reflects commitments to workers’ welfare, agricultural development, healthcare, education, women’s inclusion, security, infrastructure and accountable governance.

While urging residents to join efforts to build a greater Osun State, he said, “This manifesto is more than a collection of promises. It is a contract with the people. A contract founded on integrity, driven by compassion, and guided by a clear vision of prosperity.”

ADC: Babachir Lawal handed Atiku stinging rebuke – Presidency mocks

The Presidency has reacted to the resignation of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, from the African Democratic Congress, ADC, describing it as a setback for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, in a post on X on Monday said Lawal’s resignation amounted to a strong rejection of Atiku and the ADC.

“Babachir David Lawal just handed Atiku Abubakar and his captured ADC a stinging rebuke, along with a bitter divorce,” Onanuga wrote while sharing a post by the former SGF.

DAILY POST reports that the reaction followed Lawal’s announcement on Facebook that he had resigned from the party over alleged irregularities in its recently concluded primaries.

Lawal claimed that the primaries at various levels were manipulated in favour of Atiku and his supporters, alleging that election results were altered and that some winners were replaced by individuals loyal to the former vice president.

The former SGF said he could not remain in a party he accused of operating a “rigging machine” ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He also accused Atiku and his allies of pursuing ethnic and religious interests, arguing that the former vice president’s emergence as a presidential candidate would ultimately strengthen President Bola Tinubu’s chances of securing a second term.

Lawal further criticised northern political leaders and delegates, whom he accused of supporting Atiku’s emergence despite the region’s economic and security challenges.

Kano PDP backs Jonathan’s presidential bid

The Kano State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said it supports the presidential ambition of former President Goodluck Jonathan, adding that it respects decisions taken by the party’s national leadership.

The state PDP chairman, Hon. Yusuf Ado Kibiya, made this known on Monday during a press briefing at the party secretariat in Kano, where he addressed internal party matters and recent political developments.

Kibiya said the state chapter had examined the National Executive Committee’s decision on Jonathan’s candidacy and would continue to adhere to the party’s rules and constitution.

“Kano PDP has reviewed the national executive’s decision regarding the presidential candidacy of former President Goodluck Jonathan,” he said.

He added that the party respects the process that led to the decision and supports the right of the national leadership to determine the party’s direction.

“We acknowledge and respect the processes that led to this decision and affirm our support for their right to determine the party’s national trajectory, within the framework of our constitution and legal guidelines,” Kibiya stated.

He also said the Kano PDP would continue to work with other stakeholders to strengthen the party ahead of future elections.

“Our regional chapter remains aligned with the party’s broad objectives and will engage in constructive dialogue to advance PDP’s mission across Kano and Nigeria,” he added.

Kibiya called on members to remain united, disciplined, and focused on the party’s objectives.

He also assured supporters that, despite recent defections and political changes, the PDP in Kano remains united and committed to providing strong democratic leadership.

According to him, the party remains focused on democratic values, accountability, and public service, and will continue to play an important role in Nigeria’s politics.

‘Peter Obi avoids struggles, prefers food-is-ready politics’   -  Wike

‘Peter Obi avoids struggles, prefers food-is-ready politics’   -  Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Monday took a swipe at former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, saying leadership requires the capacity to confront challenges rather than running away from them.

Wike made the remarks during his monthly media chat in Abuja while responding to Obi’s claim that he could increase Nigeria’s electricity generation from 5,000 megawatts to 10,000 megawatts if given the opportunity.

Questioning Obi’s approach to governance, the FCT minister said the former Anambra State governor prefers situations where problems have already been solved rather than taking on difficult challenges.

“How you know someone who can do that is how you know someone who can fight challenges. Peter Obi likes food is ready, mama put. I don’t want struggling,” Wike said.

Wike argued that effective leadership is demonstrated through the ability to navigate complex national problems, particularly in a country facing economic and infrastructural challenges.

“In this country, there are challenges. You must have the capacity to face those challenges. Face the challenges you have; that’s what makes you a leader, that’s what makes you a man. Leadership is not dashing you something,” he said.

The minister also criticised opposition political parties, describing them as “known liars” and accusing them of misleading Nigerians with claims of political reform and democratic renewal.

He specifically mentioned the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), alleging that both parties have failed to live up to the standards they publicly advocate.

According to him, parties that portray themselves as alternatives to the ruling establishment have been unable to conduct internal processes without disputes and controversies.

“They said they are the saviour that will come. What has happened now?” Wike asked.

“NDC said we are the new face of democracy. ADC said this kind of party is a party that hasn’t been polluted one day; it is a party that God just brought from the womb.”

The minister further questioned the credibility of the opposition parties, citing internal disagreements and protests arising from their primary elections.

“What has happened? So dirty. See what has happened in the NDC. As small as they are, they cannot do a primary without protest.

“Look at ADC, who said it’s a coalition to take over from APC to stop the distortion of democracy. What has happened?” he added.
