Four Players On Liverpool Transfer Shortlist If Diomande Bid Fails

Published

Liverpool want to sign Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig this summer, but getting a deal over the line will not be easy.

The teen sensation is the Reds‘ number one transfer priority in the summer transfer window, with the Anfield outfit needing to strengthen in wide forward areas following the departure of Mohamed Salah and the question marks over Federico Chiesa and Cody Gakpo’s futures.

Diomande has been a shining light for the Ivory Coast at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in America, Canada and Mexico so far, winning the man of the match award for the win over Ecuador and impressing in the 2-1 defeat to Germany.

Liverpool will have to splash big money on the 19-year-old in order to complete a deal, with Leipzig looking for at least €100million to sanction a deal, not that they want to at all.

The German outfit are keen to keep hold of their red-hot forward and have offered him improved contract terms in the hopes of making him stay for at least one more year. The Red Bull side qualified for next season’s Champions League and the hope is that will encourage him to stay put for another year.

Liverpool have already had one bid for the Ivorian turned down, GIVEMESPORT understands it was for €80million plus €20 million in add-ons, so totaling the €100million that the German side were demanding. The Reds are planning to make a second offer in the coming days.

GMS senior football correspondent Ben Jacobs revealed in his newsletter – which you can sign up to receive direct to your email inbox right here – that Liverpool are not prepared to hang around when it comes to signing the teenager.

He said: “Liverpool’s perspective is that Diomande is their number one target, but if they cannot get him, and relatively quickly, they’re also prepared to move on.

“It’s not a transfer that Liverpool want to drag on until deadline day, like Alexander Isak when he moved from Newcastle, it’s clarity quickly, and if they can’t get it because the player decides to stay or Leipzig’s price remains at €130million or so, then Liverpool move on to other targets.”

And the Reds already have four other names in the frame when it comes to strengthening their forward line, as revealed by Jacobs.

He continued: “There’s appreciation for Bradley Barcola, so in a backhanded way, if PSG get Diomande, it might open the door for Barcola to move to the Premier League.

“There’s also Matias Fernandez-Pardo [from Lille], Said el Mala [from Koln] and Yankuba Minteh at Brighton, three other names the Reds are looking at.”

Red Bull ‘Give Up’ on 2026 Season Already After Just 11 Races

Published

Despite just 11 races of the 2026 season being completed, one constructor is already writing off their chances.

After 11 rounds, Red Bull have reportedly internally accepted defeat with their 2026 car. They are yet to win a race this year and currently sit fourth in the standings and over 200 points behind Mercedes in first. They have secured just four podiums, all of which have been achieved by Max Verstappen.

This is their debut season with their in-house power unit and, as a result, Laurent Mekies reigned in ambitions and downplayed their chances coming into the season. However, it has not been the engine that has given Red Bull headaches, but the chassis.

According to F1 Insider, there is an acquiescence within RB22 that the car is a ‘flop‘ despite the fact that the season is not yet halfway done.

The Milton Keyes outfit have introduced more upgrades than any other constructor this year, but the hopes that the upgrades might be a magic bullet for their problems appear to now be dashed. Verstappen, despite three podiums in the four races leading up to the summer break, is still steadfast in his criticisms and frustrations of the car. At the Hungarian Grand Prix just before the break, both him and Isack Hadjar labeled the car ‘undriveable.’

Red Bull’s technical department, led by Pierre Wache, planned ‘numerous development stages’ in an effort to make the car more ‘driveable’, but to no avail.

Red Bull Made Impressive Comeback in 2025

Red Bull optimists can take some comfort from recent history, however. They currently sit just 15 points worse off than at this stage last year, when aggressive upgrades allowed Verstappen to chase down the two McLaren drivers who sat top of the table.

The Dutchman at one point trailed the lead by 104 points before a remarkable resurgence ended with him finishing the season just two points behind world champion Lando Norris. Verstappen is now 110 points off Kimi Antonelli, yet it is very hard to imagine a similar scenario to last season panning out.

Red Bull hope to have acces to ADUO (Additional Developmental and Upgrade Opportunities), a mechanism that allows manufacturers lagging behind the benchmark ICE to catch up. They were previously regarded as the benchmark, but that title is likely to belong to Mercedes when the FIA publishes the ranking.

Given the internal air of resignation towards the current car, there is an argument that funds and dedication should be poured into next year’s car rather than waste more resources on the white elephant that is the RB22.

The regulations are largely remaining consistent, unlike last year when they underwent an overhaul. However, there will still be impactful changes, so gains can be made by prioritsing resources for the 2027 car.

Verstappen, of course, can activate his exit clause in October, so Red Bull have reasons to focus upgrades on the current car to keep the four-time world champion happy in the short term, but with many rival seats opening up in 2028, next year’s car may also be salient in whether Verstappen stays at Red Bull.

Aston Villa Progress Talks to Sign Joao Palhinha as Newcastle Focus on Hojbjerg

Aston Villa are stepping up their interest in a move to sign Bayern Munich outcast Joao Palhinha ahead of Newcastle, who are focusing on a deal for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, GIVEMESPORT sources understand.

The Villans have had a busy summer window after losing Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne and Morgan Rogers, bringing in Joao Gomes, Johan Manzambi, and Alejandro Garnacho, while Unai Emery is still keen to make further additions before the transfer deadline after Amadou Onana was ruled out for the majority of the campaign due to an ACL injury.

That has seen the midfield become a priority in the final weeks of the window, and the club are now pushing to get a deal over the line for a familiar face.

Palhinha, who has been described as ‘world-class’, spent last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur and scored the crucial goals that kept them in the Premier League. But the north London club opted against making his move permanent after signing Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, meaning he returned to parent club Bayern.

But the German side have made it clear that the 37-cap Portugal international has no future at the Allianz Arena, and they are desperate to offload him this month.

Clubs in Portugal have found a deal too difficult to do financially, while Newcastle United have also shown an interest in taking him to St James’ Park. However, GMS understands that Villa are the frontrunners for his signature, and they are now pushing to find an agreement with the Bundesliga champions, with talks progressing.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are now prioritising a move to sign Denmark international Hojbjerg from Marseille, having held talks with the Ligue 1 side, GMS understands.

The Magpies are looking to replace Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, who left for Tottenham and Arsenal respectively in deals worth a combined £175m in this window, and new manager Matthias Jaissle has identified Hojbjerg as someone he wants in his squad, and the 31-year-old is now seen as a leading target.

Cairney: Palhinha ‘One of the Best’

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Joao Palhinha celebrates Premier League win over Aston Villa via Reuters

During his time at Fulham in his first stint in the Premier League, Palhinha established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the division.

A move to Bayern ultimately hasn’t worked out, which has seen his reputation take a hit. However, it’s clear that he still has the quality to make an impact at the highest level, with Tom Cairney singing his praises.

“If you lose the ball, he smells blood,” Cairney said.

“He’s probably one of the best I’ve ever seen off the ball, in terms of getting back, recovering and trying to win back the ball.”

“He doesn’t just put pressure on them, he goes back to win the ball and does the tackle.

“It’s amazing to watch sometimes. I think the fans have taken to him. I think he’s been a breath of fresh air in the Premier League.”

Everton And Crystal Palace Agree Swap Deal

Brennan Johnson and Dwight McNeil are switching clubs, with Crystal Palace and Everton agreeing a swap deal for the two players.

And GIVEMESPORT understands that no money will change hands, with the two clubs happy to exchange players without any fees being involved in the transaction. GMS understands the deal is done and will be completed in the coming hours.

Proper swap deals are rare in modern football, but this is an instance whereby it is a straight swap between the clubs for the two players.

Johnson was Palace’s record signing under Oliver Glasner in the January transfer window, but struggled to secure a regular spot in the team following his move from Tottenham Hotspur.

Glasner rated Johnson highly at Crystal Palace

oliver glasner

He had become a hero at Spurs by scoring the winning goal in the UEFA Europa League final win over Manchester United in 2025, but fell down the pecking order under new boss Thomas Frank, eventually being sold to the Eagles in a £35million deal.

The Welshman would go on to play 18 times for Palace, with 13 of those coming as starts, registering just one assist.

Glasner spoke very highly of Johnson after signing him from Spurs. He said: “He’s such a great player. He has everything you need as an attacking player. Incredible skills.

“I feel sometimes he puts himself under too much pressure so that he doesn’t play with this freedom that maybe he should have.

“He just should enjoy playing football because he’s such a great player. He has all the skills. With freedom I think then he will be the best version of himself and have his best performances.”

The two players will face off against one another in the first game of the season

Dwight McNeil

Similarly, McNeil struggled to nail down a regular starting spot in David Moyes’ Everton side, starting just 14 matches and also registering just one assist during the campaign at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Eagles did try to sign McNeil in the January transfer window, with the 26-year-old set to join the south Londoners only for it to fall through due to a problem with the paperwork.

GMS understands that both players’ respective medicals will take place on Monday, with the deal to be concluded soon after.

In a twist of fate, the two players will face up against their old teammates on the first day of the new 2026/27 Premier League season, with Palace hosting Everton at Selhurst Park on Saturday, August 22.
