Inmate dies in Kano correctional facility after alleged sexual assault
A young man identified as Shamsu Muhammad has died while in custody at the Gwauron Dutse Correctional Centre in Kano, following injuries reportedly sustained during an altercation with another inmate.
According to a report by Freedom Radio, Shamsu was allegedly bitten on the leg by another inmate after he reportedly refused a demand for sexual relations.
The deceased’s uncle, Bello Muhammad, said the incident occurred after Shamsu was remanded at the correctional facility by Court No. 27 in Nomansland, Kano, presided over by Justice Hauwa Abba Musa, over an alleged offence.
Bello said Shamsu had told him that an unnamed inmate approached him and allegedly attempted to engage him in a sexual act.
According to him, Shamsu refused, after which the inmate allegedly bit him severely, causing an injury that reportedly affected the veins around his leg.
“He told us that the inmate asked him to engage in a sexual act, but he refused. The inmate then bit him, causing serious injury to his leg,” Bello said.
He further alleged that the inmate had previously been involved in similar incidents involving other inmates.
“This person does nothing but look for men, especially newly admitted inmates. If someone refuses, he bites him, and sometimes it takes several people to pull him away,” Bello alleged.
Following the injury, Shamsu was reportedly taken to a hospital for treatment, he later died after spending few days receiving medical attention.
The family’s lawyer, Barrister Garzali Dattijo Ahmed, said they had approached the court seeking official documents of Shamsu’s death so that the family could formally petition the relevant authorities, including the correctional service and the Kano Emirate authorities.
“We want to write a formal complaint to the authorities because sane and mentally unstable inmates are being kept together at Gwauron Dutse, and the mentally unstable ones are killing those who are mentally sound. We cannot accept this situation,” Ahmed said.
However, the Kano State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service has rejected the allegation that Shamsu was attacked because he refused a sexual advance.
The command’s spokesperson, Musbahu Lawal Kofar Nassarawa, said an internal investigation did not support the claim, while confirming that Shamsu sustained an injury and was provided with medical attention.
“Our investigation shows that the incident did not happen that way. We have strict measures in place, and it would not be possible for such a situation to occur as alleged,” Kofar Nassarawa said.
He added that Shamsu was properly attended to after sustaining the injury.
“It is true that he sustained an injury, and the necessary measures were taken to care for him. He was given medical attention and was eventually granted bail,” he said.
The conflicting accounts have raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding Shamsu Muhammad’s death and the safety and welfare of inmates at the facility.
The deceased’s family said they will decide on the legal and administrative steps they will take to seek clarification and accountability over the circumstances surrounding his death.
In May 2025, There was also widespread controversy over allegations of increasing cases of inmates seeking sexual relations with other male inmates in Kano correctional facilities.
The controversy began after an inmate Shehu Adamu, reportedly raised a complaint of sexual assault, although the correctional authorities denied the allegation, sparking intense debate among members of the public.
The Niger State Police Command has arrested 139 suspects following a crackdown on alleged criminal activities linked to an unlawful and violent rally in Suleja, with 64 of those arrested subsequently arraigned and remanded in a correctional centre.
The Command in a statement issued on Friday by its spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the arrests were made after the Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, deployed the Command’s Violent Crimes Response Unit, led by CSP Hassan Gimba, to Suleja on August 4, 2026.
Abiodun explained that at the end of the raids, 139 suspects were arrested at different locations.
He explained that this followed reports of an unlawful assembly during which some participants allegedly carried dangerous weapons and attacked and robbed members of the public.
The police said the operation was intelligence-led and targeted identified criminal blackspots across Madalla, Kwata, Bakin-Ruwa, Dikko, Kaduna Road, Sabon-Wuse, Gwazunu and Chaza.
According to him, “Following screening and investigation, 64 of the suspects were allegedly found in possession of large quantities of suspected cannabis, dangerous weapons, scissors, knives, cutlasses and four live cartridges”.
He disclosed that the 64 suspects were subsequently arraigned before the Chief Magistrate Court in Suleja on charges including criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, aiding and abetment, harbouring suspected criminals, giving information to miscreants, causing disappearance of evidence, mischief and possession of dangerous weapons.
The court remanded the suspects in a correctional centre, according to the police.
The crackdown comes amid growing security concerns in Suleja and surrounding communities, where criminal gangs and violent street activities have continued to pose a challenge to residents and security agencies.
The Command said the operation was part of efforts to rid the area of criminal elements and restore public safety.
Operatives of Police Patrol Team attached to Operation Delta Shield on stop-and-search duty along Nnebisi Road, Asaba, have arrested two suspected drug dealers.
The suspects were identified as Hillary Osondu and Abubakar Bello.
One hundred and thirty-two (132) sachets of tramadol were allegedly recovered from them on Thursday.
Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe confirmed the report in a statement sent to DAILY POST correspondent in Warri.
He said, “on 13th August, 2026, operatives of police patrol team attached to Operation Delta Shield, while conducting a stop-and-search operation along Nnebisi Road, Asaba, intercepted a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number ZBL-549-XA.
“A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 132 sachets of 100mg tramadol and the arrest of two suspects, Hillary Osondu, 54, and Abubakar Bello, 54.
“The suspects are in custody, while investigation is ongoing.”
Meanwhile, Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi has commended the operatives for their prompt response and charged officers across the command to sustain the momentum through proactive and intelligence-led policing.

Following credible information from a kidnapped victim who escaped from captivity and intelligence provided by members of the public, the Kaduna State Police Command said it has arrested six suspected kidnappers in the state.
In a statement by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, the command said its operatives also dismantled a suspected kidnappers’ hideout in Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
According to the statement, the escaped victim reported his abduction to the police on Tuesday and identified a house belonging to one Ja’e Samalu, 65, of Dogon Pako Village, Ikara, as the location where he was held captive.
It said upon receiving the complaint, the Ikara Police Division promptly mobilised officers, in collaboration with members of the local vigilante service, to raid the location, adding that the operation led to the arrest of six suspects aged between 20 and 65.
According to the statement, the suspects are currently in police custody, while an investigation is ongoing to establish their individual roles in the crime.
“Efforts are also ongoing to apprehend other members of the criminal network,” he added.
The statement said the Commissioner of Police, CP Muhammad Rabiu, commended the operatives and members of the public for providing timely information, while urging residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, movements and activities to the nearest police formation.
The commissioner also warned residents to be wary of criminal elements who might use residential buildings as hideouts or holding facilities for kidnapped victims, stressing that community vigilance and timely information-sharing remain critical to preventing and dismantling criminal networks in the state.
