Zamfara North: Shinkafi cries out over exclusion from APC Senate race

Published

on

Former governorship candidate in Zamfara State, Dr Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, has lamented the conduct of the All Progressives Congress, APC, primary elections in the state.

Shinkafi accused the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, of murdering democracy and shrinking the chances of the APC winning the general election in Zamfara.

He noted that President Bola Tinubu had stated that the APC would adhere to democratic principles and rule of law as enshrined in the Electoral Act 2026, particularly on how a political party would nominate candidates for elections.

He also pointed to some instances when the APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, said the party would opt for direct primaries where consensus arrangements failed to avoid imposition of candidates that could adversely affect the party in the general election.

Shinkafi added, “To the greatest surprise of most aspirants for senatorial primaries in Zamfara State, Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle arrived the state today with a private jet along with past and serving governors of Zamfara State claiming that Mr President had ordered that all aspirants for senate should withdraw for all serving senators for party primaries scheduled to hold on Tuesday, 19th May 2026.

“There was no meeting or consultation for this arbitrary order which contradicted earlier statements made by the President and National Chairman of our great party. This undemocratic order if actually made by Mr President does not comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.

“I want to state categorically without any apology that the current economic hardship, insecurity in Zamfara State, undemocratic attitude of Bello Matawalle and his co-travelers, l foresee danger in the forthcoming general election.

“This can be averted if by adhering strictly by the 1999 Constitution as amended, the Electoral Act 2026 and the APC constitution. Nigeria is governed by the rule of law and not the rule of might.

“Governor Dauda Lawal will be the major loser in this conspiracy to exclude already cleared aspirants from participating in the senate primaries in Zamfara State as the chance of APC winning the elections in the state is minimal . The actions of these self imposed godfathers in Zamfara State is a political suicide.

“In many parts of the country where APC governs, the provisions of the law and internal democracy were not truncated as obtainable in Zamfara State.

“In 2019, APC contested all elective positions in Zamfara State. Because of the inability of the party to amicably resolve its internal crisis caused by imposition of candidates, aggrieved aspirants who were screened and cleared to contest the APC primaries instituted a suit at the Zamfara State High Court challenging the conduct of the party primaries which violated the Electoral Act and APC guidelines for the exercise.

“The party fielded these imposed candidates for the 2019 general election ignoring wise counsel to reconsider its arbitrary and self seeking decision.

“The matter commenced from the Zamfara State High Court to the Court to Appeal, Sokoto Division up to the Supreme Court. The Court of Appeal, Sokoto Division set aside the judgement of the Zamfara State High Court which upheld the purported primaries and declared that there were no valid primaries conducted by the party. The judgement was appealed by the APC at the Supreme Court.

“The apex court delivered judgement on 24th May 2019, and upheld the judgement of the Court of Appeal which had invalidated the APC primaries in Zamfara State as well as the elections conducted by INEC and directed INEC to issue certificates of return to the party that came second in the elections. That was how APC lost all the seats it won in the 2019 general election including the governorship.

“The current imposition of candidates by the APC is political banditry and proves to the nation that Bello Matawalle is a political bandit being the arrow head of this assault on our democracy.

“Accordingly, l have ordered all my supporters in Zamfara North Senatorial District not to participate in this undemocratic affirmation of anointed senatorial aspirants of Matawalle. It is common knowledge in Zamfara State that political thugs and hoodlums have been mobilised to disrupt the senatorial primaries in the state to pave way for the illegal consensus aspirants to be affirmed.

“As a democrat and law abiding citizen, l will not participate in any electoral process that is not in compliance with the provisions of the law. All my supporters should remain calm and stay at home.

“I was never consulted or invited for any meeting on the so-called consensus arrangements. I did not withdraw from the the senatorial race, did not write any letter that I have stepped down, did not make any private or public statements that I have withdrawn from the primary.

“This injustice shall not stand. I will challenge my exclusion from Zamfara North Senatorial Primary in Court. “

2027: APP prepared to contest elections in lmo – Njesi

The Action Peoples Party, APP, in Imo State says it is fully prepared to contest the 2027 general elections and believes it will win.

During a press conference in Owerri, the party’s chairman, Chief Ernest Njesi, said the party has already uploaded all its candidates to INEC.

These include 3 candidates for the Senate, 10 candidates for the House of Representatives, and 27 candidates for the Imo State House of Assembly.

He said the party will continue visiting communities across Imo State to encourage people to support the APP and educate voters about its programmes.

Njesi also announced that the party’s leader in Imo State, Dr Chima Matthew Amadi, plans to contest for the Imo East (Owerri Zone) Senate seat in 2027.

He added that after the Senate election, Dr Amadi intends to pursue his ambition of becoming the Governor of Imo State.

The APP leadership also condemned what it described as an attack on its state secretariat and the destruction of one of its billboards.

The party alleged that political opponents were responsible and said such actions would not stop it from participating in the elections.

The party’s Publicity Secretary, Amb. Steve Nnadi, called on journalists to report the truth without fear and urged Imo residents to support and vote for the APP in the 2027 elections.

“The APP is telling the people of Imo State that it is ready for the 2027 elections, has chosen its candidates, believes it can win, and says it will not be intimidated by alleged political attacks.”

Osun Central Senator, Fadeyi defects to PDP

Published

Senator Olubiyi Fadeyi, representing Osun Central Senatorial District, has announced his return to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Senator Fadeyi said his decision followed concerns over the conduct of the All Progressives Congress, APC, senatorial ticket process ahead of the 2027 general election.

Fadeyi who confirmed his defection on Thursday, disclosed that he had formally notified the Senate of his decision to leave the APC and rejoin the PDP.

The senator also declared that he had emerged as the PDP’s candidate for the Osun Central Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 National Assembly election under the party faction led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

“I am back in the PDP led by the FCT Minister, His Excellency, Nyesom Wike. I have already written to the Senate,” Fadeyi said. “I can also confirm that I am the candidate for Osun Central Senatorial District for the 2027 Senate election.”

Fadeyi had left the PDP in July 2025 alongside four other National Assembly members to join the APC, where he sought to secure the party’s ticket for another term in the Senate.

However, the APC eventually selected Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Adekunle Adegoke, as its senatorial candidate for Osun Central, prompting Fadeyi to reconsider his political future.

In his resignation letter, the senator explained that he joined the APC in support of President Bola Tinubu, believing assurances given to him regarding the party’s nomination process would be respected.

“I joined the APC as a progressive party in good faith to support Mr President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his ancestral home, which falls within my senatorial district,” the letter stated.

Fadeyi said he had expected the party to honour the understanding that he would receive the APC’s sole ticket for the Osun Central Senate seat, adding that the process was intended to be based on consensus.

According to him, “the anticipated consensus arrangement did not materialise, while the eventual candidate selection process failed to meet his expectations of fairness, transparency and internal democracy.

“Recent developments from the leadership of the APC in Osun State have created serious trust issues within the party and made my continued membership of the party untenable. No consensus process was genuinely conducted, nor were party primaries held in a transparent and acceptable manner.”

The senator expressed disappointment that while other federal lawmakers who defected with him reportedly secured return tickets, he was denied the opportunity to contest under the APC platform despite earlier expectations.

Fadeyi maintained that his decision to leave the APC should not be interpreted as opposition to President Tinubu, stressing instead that it reflected his belief that political parties should uphold agreements, democratic principles, fairness and mutual trust in their internal processes.

You’ve chosen insults over transparency – Atiku fires back at Tinubu, Presidency

Published

By

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has described the Presidency’s latest statement attacking his person as further proof that the President Bola Tinubu’s administration has chosen diversion over disclosure and insults over accountability.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said it was telling that the Presidency devoted several paragraphs to personal attacks without addressing the fundamental issues that continue to generate legitimate public interest.

He said: “When governments abandon facts for insults and substitute evidence with abuse, they unwittingly admit that they have run out of convincing answers. Nigerians expected clarification. What they received instead was a barrage of name-calling and political invective.”

Atiku noted that raising questions about matters contained in public records should never be misconstrued as an attack on Nigeria’s sovereignty.

“No one has reported Nigeria to anyone. Nigeria is not on trial. The issue concerns questions arising from publicly available records relating to the occupant of the nation’s highest office. Those records were not created by the opposition, the ADC, or any political actor. Attempting to silence legitimate public inquiry by wrapping oneself in the national flag does not answer the questions before the country.”

The former Vice President said it was particularly unfortunate that the Presidency chose to revive old political allegations against him instead of responding directly to the issues it was confronted with.

“Nigerians can distinguish between political mudslinging and factual responses. Personal attacks do not erase public records, nor do they substitute for transparency. The Presidency should resist the temptation to personalise issues that require clear and factual explanations.”

Atiku further observed the irony of an administration that actively seeks foreign investment, foreign loans, favourable international ratings, and global endorsements suddenly portraying international scrutiny as an assault on Nigeria’s independence.

“You cannot celebrate international validation when it is convenient and condemn international scrutiny when it becomes uncomfortable. Accountability is not foreign interference; it is a democratic obligation,” he said.

He also dismissed the argument that electoral victory automatically settles every question concerning public accountability.

“Elections confer political authority, but they do not extinguish the public’s right to ask questions. A democratic mandate is not a substitute for transparency, nor does it exempt any public official from the obligation to account to the people.”

Atiku urged the Presidency to abandon its combative posture and provide Nigerians with clear, factual responses instead of inflammatory rhetoric.

He said: “If the government believes that the public record has been misunderstood or misrepresented, the appropriate response is to present the facts. Abuse cannot replace evidence, and propaganda cannot replace truth.”

The former Vice President maintained that history has consistently shown that confident governments respond to scrutiny with openness rather than hostility.

“The Nigerian people deserve answers, not insults. They want to know if their President forfeited money to the Government of the United States of America on account of drug related offenses. They deserve transparency, not diversion. Until those questions are addressed with facts, no amount of outrage or personal attacks will silence legitimate public inquiry.”
