Truck crushes bus, leaves female POS operator critically injured in Lagos
A female Point of Sale, POS, operator suffered severe injuries after a fully loaded 40-foot container truck lost control and overturned onto a commercial bus and nearby shops at Second Rainbow inward Oshodi, Lagos.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, said the accident occurred along the service lane beside the Police Tactical Team Station.
According to the agency, the truck veered off its path while in motion, overturned onto a commercial shuttle bus and rammed into roadside businesses, causing extensive damage.
The injured POS operator, who was working under a canopy when the crash occurred, sustained serious injuries to both legs. She was rescued by officers of the Police Tactical Team and rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
LASTMA officials quickly arrived at the scene to manage traffic, secure the area and coordinate rescue efforts with other emergency responders.
The truck driver was arrested and handed over to the police for investigation and possible prosecution.
A recovery truck was later deployed to remove the overturned vehicle and the damaged bus, while officers from the Orile-Iganmu Police Division commenced investigations into the incident.
Despite the severity of the crash and the destruction recorded, traffic flow in the area was largely maintained due to the swift response of LASTMA personnel.
“To expedite the restoration of normalcy, a recovery tow truck was immediately deployed to evacuate the fallen articulated vehicle and the damaged mini shuttle bus, while security operatives from the Orile-Iganmu Division of the Nigeria Police Force commenced comprehensive documentation and preliminary investigations into the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident,” the statement said.
Reacting, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, urged truck operators, fleet managers and logistics companies to carry out thorough mechanical checks on heavy-duty vehicles, especially braking systems and other critical safety components, before putting them on the road.
He warned that poor vehicle maintenance remains a major threat to lives, public infrastructure and road safety, and called on transport operators to strictly comply with established safety standards.

Police rescue 23-year-old after jumping into Lagos lagoon
The Marine Police Unit of the Lagos State Police Command has rescued a 23-year-old man, Joshua Babalola, after he reportedly attempted to take his own life by jumping into the Lagos lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge.
The incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. on June 8, 2026, when officers of the Marine Police received information that a young man had plunged into the lagoon from the bridge.
Acting swiftly on the report, marine police operatives mobilised to the scene and successfully rescued the victim alive with the assistance of local fishermen operating in the area.
Following his rescue, Babalola identified himself as a painter residing in the Iwo Road area of Ibadan, Oyo State. He reportedly told authorities that he had travelled from Ibadan earlier that day without informing anyone of his whereabouts.
According to him, he decided to jump into the lagoon after becoming overwhelmed by financial difficulties and feelings of hopelessness. He also disclosed that his mobile phone was lost in the water during the incident.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the victim had been stabilised and was currently under police care while efforts were ongoing to locate and contact his family members.
“He was rescued with the help of fishermen in the area. He is the second person in three months to be rescued from the lagoon,” Adebisi stated.
The police spokesperson used the opportunity to emphasise the importance of public collaboration in crime prevention and emergency response efforts.
“Effective policing thrives on partnership between the police and the public. Prompt and credible information from residents is crucial in preventing and combating incidents.
“We urge community leaders, boat operators, fishermen and other stakeholders in the riverine areas to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious persons, movements or activities to the nearest police formation or the marine police unit,” he added.
The command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Lagos State while encouraging residents to remain alert and cooperate with security agencies.

Police arrest suspected kidnap kingpin, recover gun, ammunition in Benue
Operatives of the Benue State Police Command have apprehended a suspected kidnapping and armed robbery kingpin believed to be linked to a string of criminal incidents in Gboko Local Government Area.
According to security sources, the suspect was arrested around 1:00 p.m. on June 8 after intelligence reports indicated he had been spotted in the Abagu area of Gboko.
Acting swiftly on the tip-off, police operatives stormed the location and successfully took the suspect into custody without resistance.
Items recovered from him during the operation included a locally made short gun, five live cartridges, and various charms, sources revealed.
Trouble, however, erupted while officers were transporting the suspect to the station, as an irate crowd allegedly intercepted the police team and attempted to carry out mob justice.
The residents reportedly attacked the suspect before security personnel intervened, rescued him from the mob, and restored calm to the area.
The suspect sustained injuries during the assault and was immediately taken to the General Hospital in Gboko, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Police authorities said investigations are ongoing to ascertain the suspect’s alleged role in kidnapping, armed robbery, and other criminal activities within the locality.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all criminal suspects are prosecuted through lawful procedures and urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands.
