BREAKING: Court clears Goodluck Jonathan to contest 2027 presidential election

Published

on

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has been cleared by an Abuja Federal High Court to contest in the 2027 presidential election.

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, under the leadership of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, last week offered a waiver to Jonathan as the only presidential candidate of the party.

But one Johnmary Jideobi had instituted a suit seeking an order restraining Jonathan from presenting himself to any political party as a candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

The plaintiff had earlier asked the court to stop INEC from accepting, processing or publishing Jonathan’s name as a presidential candidate.

He asked the court to determine whether, having regard to Sections 1(1), (2), (3) and 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution, Jonathan remains eligible to seek the office of president again.

But in his ruling on Tuesday, Justice Peter Lifu held that Jonathan could participate in the election as a contestant.

Abia North Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has vowed to resign from the All Progressives Congress, APC, if President Bola Tinubu disrespect the opposition and the Catholic church.

Kalu, however, said Nigerians should not expect Tinubu to lay red carpet for the opposition in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections.

The former Abia State governor spoke while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

He said: “Will you just lay red carpet for the opposition to come and be dancing around if you are a politician?

“Tinubu is fair to them, he has not touched any of them unknowingly.

“The law of the land is very straightforward and if you respect the law of the land you will be well in the country.

“What he said is that he can’t give the opposition red carpet. If I’m your enemy will you give me a red carpet? If I’m fighting with you, will you give me red carpet?

“I’m a very fair minded man who speaks the truth, if I heard what he said that we are going to have a fair contest and he won’t touch anybody.

“Any day Tinubu disrespect the opposition or Catholic church I will resign from the APC.”
