10 Sets of Football Teammates That Openly Disliked Each Other
Summary
- Relationships sour among football teammates due to various reasons, leading to animosity and conflict.
- Instances of notable feuds among teammates, such as Nasri and Frimpong, showcase deep issues.
- Personal differences and on-field clashes can lead players like Bellamy and Riise to despise each other silently.
It’s tempting to think that all football teammates get along. After all, they spend countless hours together—training, eating, travelling, celebrating victories, and even enduring the occasional defeat. These shared experiences can forge deep bonds, almost like a second family.
But with so much time spent in close quarters, friction is inevitable. Football teams are melting pots of diverse personalities, and some players are simply destined to clash. Whether it’s a battle of egos, conflicting values, or a heated moment taken too far, some relationships go beyond mere disagreement and spiral into full-blown animosity.
With that in mind, GIVEMESPORT has delved into 10 notorious cases of teammates who couldn’t stand each other. These are the players who didn’t just fail to see eye-to-eye—they openly hated one another. Buckle up, because behind-the-scenes drama is just as intense as the action on the pitch.
10 Greatest Player Rivalries in Football History
These legendary players have gone head-to-head in some thrilling battles over the years…
Emmanuel Frimpong and Samir Nasri
Arsenal
This feud began between the two former Arsenal players in 2011 when Samir Nasri slammed Emmanuel Frimpong for getting sent off during a 2-0 loss to Liverpool. Frimpong was just 19 years old at the time, and it was his second Premier League appearance for the club.
“Nobody needed to tell me that what I did was stupid,” Frimpong told the Athletic. “After the game, everybody came into the changing room and Arsene [Wenger] was quiet. Then Nasri basically stood up in front of everybody and said we lost the game because of me.
“OK, I can understand that, but I was thinking, ‘Why would somebody — especially me playing, I think that was like my second game — why would any professional do that to a young player in that kind of moment?'”
A few months later, Jack Wilshere took to social media to wish Nasri good luck after he left Arsenal to sign for Manchester City. Frimpong saw Wilshere’s tweet and replied: “Pffffff come on Jack.”
The comment did not go unnoticed by Nasri, who rang Frimpong to confront him. He revealed: “I took the phone and it was Nasri on the phone threatening me, telling me that when he sees me, this that. I told him, ‘I’m not one of the players that’s afraid of you. If you want us to sort it out as men, we can sort it out as men’.
“To be honest, at that time when he left Arsenal, I could tell him what I actually thought about him because he wasn’t there so I could basically let him know my feelings. So I just told him that I don’t like him, I don’t respect him and I will never respect him as a professional player.”
He added: “For me, the truth is I’ve never liked Nasri and I will never, ever like this guy. Even if he gives me five billion dollars, I will still not like him.”
Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Rafael van der Vaart
Ajax
The two former Ajax teammates clashed during an international friendly between Sweden and the Netherlands. Zlatan Ibrahimovic injured Rafael Van der Vaart and the Dutchman believes it was deliberate. In his 2013 autobiography, Zlatan revealed that he threatened to break both of Van der Vaart’s legs.
The striker told his teammate, per the Daily Mail: “I didn’t injure you on purpose, and you know that. If you accuse me again, I’ll break both your legs, and that time it will be on purpose.” Van der Vaart opened up about their frosty relationship in an interview with FourFourTwo in 2018. He said:
“Yes, he did say that [I’ll break your legs], but Zlatan said it to everyone. It’s also true that around that time things just weren’t working between the two of us, but I would rather be in a team with people who are honest, like him, even if it means there are a few arguments. But there wasn’t a specific moment we fell out – we generally didn’t get along well.”
Kolo Toure and William Gallas
Arsenal
Kolo Toure and William Gallas had the potential to be a fantastic centre-back pairing at Arsenal, but their relationship wasn’t exactly strong. “When you play with somebody and you don’t even talk to each other on the pitch it’s really difficult,” Toure said in 2010, per The Guardian. “Me and Gallas… we didn’t talk to each other at all.”
Their relationship was so poor that Toure realised that he had to leave for the good of the team. He added: “One of us had to go and it was me. It was coming down to me really because I didn’t want to put the team in a difficult position, so I was the one who said I wanted to go.” And so the Ivorian upped and left to join Manchester City, a route many Arsenal players chose during that timeframe.
Jens Lehmann and Manuel Almunia
Arsenal
More clashes at Arsenal. Jens Lehmann wasn’t too happy with playing second fiddle to Manuel Almunia in the 2007/08 campaign. Almunia said during his time in north London, per talkSPORT: “I know he hates me. Every morning I wake up I know it’s going to be the same. I’ve had to put up with it every day since he was out of the team and even before then.
“I wake up and I know what it’s going to be like. But I don’t care about him any more. He can say what he likes.”
Speaking to The Athletic in 2019, the Spaniard also recalled: “The problems came when I was very excited and very fit, training well with so much energy and at that same time [Lehmann] wasn’t having his best time at Arsenal, so when Arsene Wenger decided to change the No.1, he’s a winner and he took it very badly.” It went to show that having two top class goalkeepers fighting for the same position never ends well.
Mauro Icardi and Maxi Lopez
Sampdoria
We probably all know why Mauro Icardi and Maxi Lopez aren’t exactly friends. It began when Icardi and Lopez played together for Sampdoria. Lopez offered Icardi a place to stay at his home. It didn’t go to plan as Icardi would have an affair with Lopez’s wife, Wanda Nara.
Nara would eventually leave Lopez for Icardi, and Lopez made his feelings clear when he refused to shake Icardi’s hand ahead of a meeting against Inter Milan in 2014. Speaking in 2019, Lopez revealed that he had finally forgiven his ex-teammate and even thanked Icardi for taking Nara away from him.
Teddy Sheringham and Andy Cole
Manchester United
Despite playing four seasons together and having discovered great success at Manchester United, Andy Cole and Teddy Sheringham were never friends. Cole accused Sheringham of ruining his England debut in 1995. Cole was replacing Sheringham, who didn’t make eye contact and refused his offer of a handshake. “I didn’t want to play the game after that,” Cole told The Daily Telegraph in 2019. “That’s how embarrassed I felt.
“Snubbed on the line when you’re making your debut as a young kid! I think I hit the bar in the game but I couldn’t get it out of my mind. From that moment on, I knew Sheringham was not for me.” The pair were reunited two years later when Cole joined Sheringham at Manchester United.
“We played together for years. We scored a lot of goals. I never spoke a single word to him. I would rather sit down and have a cuppa with Neil Ruddock, who broke my leg in two places in 1996, than with Teddy Sheringham, who I’ve pretty much detested for the past 15 years.”
Jamie Carragher and El-Hadji Diouf
Liverpool
El-Hadji Diouf was never the most likeable person and has taken on Liverpool legends Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher since leaving Anfield. But it’s the latter who appears to hate Diouf the most. He called Diouf “the worst footballer” he played with at Liverpool.
“The worst has to be El Hadji Diouf,” Carragher said, per the Daily Star. “Actually, I quite enjoyed playing against him as you could kick him then, can’t kick your own players.” Meanwhile, Diouf said, per SportsJoe:
“The difference between Jamie and me is that I am a world-class player and he is a s**t. The type of s**t that writes a book and mentions me all the time. Me, in my book, he does not warrant one phrase: he’s a f*****g loser.”
Diouf launched another rant against Carragher in 2019, saying, per Goal: “Jamie Carragher, he has two left feet. He’s a right-footed player who has two left feet and he played because he was a Scouser. “If he was not a Liverpool kid, he was never going to make the career he did. But I had the [balls] to go out of my house and cash in on my talent here in Europe. Was it necessary for him to go to Inter, to Real Madrid? Has he had any offers in his life?”
Lothar Matthaus and Stefan Effenberg
Germany & Bayern Munich
Lothar Matthaus and Stefan Effenberg were teammates for both Bayern Munich and the German national team. So you’d think they’d get on quite well, but the reality couldn’t be more different. Matthaus’ failure to take a penalty for his country in the 1990 World Cup final didn’t go down well with Effenberg.
Effenberg called Matthaus a ‘quitter’ in his autobiography, and dedicated an entire chapter to his former teammate titled: ‘What Lothar Matthaus knows about football.’ It was a single blank page. In return, it’s clear that Matthaus feels the same way, as his former teammate is still referenced in a lot of his social media posts.
John Fashanu and Lawrie Sanchez
Wimbledon
Wimbledon were called the ‘Crazy Gang’ for a reason. Despite winning the FA Cup final together in 1988, a serious feud between two key players was occurring. The two clashed in training, with John Fashanu recalling the story in an interview with FourFourTwo in 2002.
He started: “I don’t like Sanch [Lawrie Sanchez] and he doesn’t like me. Sanch and I had a disagreement in training. Sanch gave me a shot and, give him credit, it wasn’t a bad shot. I thought I’d teach Sanch a lesson and gave a sweep of the legs, but Sanch has calves like most people have thighs and he didn’t move. So I gave him another couple, but Sanch came back at me.
“So I thought, ‘I’m gonna take this guy out’, and I hit him with one of the best shots I’d been training with – BAM! Take that, Sanch! – right in the solar plexus, a shot that would supposedly knock a horse down. And still he stood there. Then Terry Burton came over to break us up.” Fashanu’s only regret, he claimed, was not striking Lawrie Sanchez sooner.
Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise
Liverpool
Craig Bellamy’s dislike for John Arne Riise stemmed from a notorious incident during their time at Liverpool. In 2007, during a team bonding trip, Bellamy allegedly hit Riise with a golf club after an argument escalated. The tension between the two was fueled by their contrasting personalities: Bellamy, known for his fiery temper, often clashed with the more laid-back Riise.
Despite this, both players remained professional on the field, but their relationship remained strained. Bellamy later admitted the incident caused a rift in the dressing room, highlighting the personal friction that impacted their time together at Liverpool. Arne Riise, meanwhile, said as recently as April, 2024:
“We’re not friends and we won’t be friends, he’s not a person I want to have in my life because of what happened. But at the same time, people make mistakes, massive mistakes, and it’s all about apologising and moving on. He’s not a person I need in my life and I won’t have in my life, so I wish him all the best. Life goes on.”

Tottenham Eye Bargain Deal To Sign Marcus Rashford
Tottenham Hotspur are keen to add more experience to Roberto De Zerbi’s ranks after avoiding relegation to the Championship last month.
Spurs retained their Premier League status with a 1-0 win over Everton on the final day of the campaign as London rivals West Ham United were relegated.
Plans are now in motion to strengthen their squad for a full season under De Zerbi. The North London outfit have already agreed deals for Liverpool defender Andy Robertson and Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi – with both moves just awaiting official confirmation.
Both players will join on free transfers with their contracts at their respective clubs to expire at the end of this month.
Now Spurs are in the market for more bargains and are interested in a move for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford.
Tottenham eye move for Marcus Rashford
That is according to a report from the i Paper, who claim Rashford is of interest as Spurs look to add Premier League experience to their squad.
Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona as he helped the Spanish giants retain the La Liga title. However, Barca’s £69million move to sign Anthony Gordon last week may stop them going through with their option to buy deal.
Rashford has played 297 times in the Premier League and scored 97 goals along with providing 42 assists. Rashford is also attracting interest from Newcastle United and Aston Villa.
The England international spent the second half of the 2024/25 season on loan at Villa. Newcastle, meanwhile, see him as a potential replacement for Gordon.
No offers have been tabled to United as things stand.
Marcus Rashford prefers Barcelona move
According to the report, Rashford’s preference is to return to Barcelona. The La Liga outfit have a £26million option to buy the player but that expires on June 15.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, sporting director Deco and president Joan Laporta all want the player to return to the La Liga champions.
While the Spanish club do want to keep Rashford, they do not want to spend the £26million and are more likely to offer £15million to United after June 15.
The Red Devils are relaxed about the situation and believe interest from other clubs gives them a better chance of selling Rashford for £26million, which in itself is a bargain price for a player of his quality and experience.
If Rashford does not leave the Red Devils before pre-season, he is expected to report to Carrington after the World Cup.
He is under contract with United until 2028, with wages worth £325,000-a-week.
Rashford, who Gordon labelled as ‘one of the best players in the world’, would upgrade Tottenham’s attack and provide the experience the club wants this summer.
Barca’s unwillingness to meet the £26million fee gives Spurs an opening to bring the player to North London.

Arsenal Get Green Light To Hijack Man Utd Move For ‘Elite’ Midfielder
Mateus Fernandes has been given the ‘green light’ to leave West Ham United following their relegation from the Premier League, according to TEAMtalk.
The Hammers need to sell a handful of players after dropping out of the top flight, with the club required to raise as much as £150million through player sales.
Fernandes is attracting interest from several Premier League sides, with Manchester United in talks over a move to sign the Portuguese star.
The 21-year-old joined West Ham last summer from Southampton, after the Saints were relegated. He still has four years left on his contract at the London Stadium and the Irons are not willing to let him go for cheap.
West Ham want £80m for Mateus Fernandes
According to TEAMtalk, West Ham will demand £80million to sell the ‘elite’ Fernandes this summer.
A fee in that region would smash the Championship transfer record, which currently stands at £53million following Romeo Lavia’s move to Chelsea from Southampton three years ago.
But Manchester United could see their move to sign Fernandes hijacked by Arsenal.
The Gunners have already made contact with the Hammers about a move for the player and are weighing up making a formal bid. While the Irons want £80million for the midfielder, offers are expected to be in the region of £60million.
Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in the player.
Former Liverpool player Jan Molby branded Fernandes as an ‘exceptional’ player who has ‘got it all’ and believes the midfielder is the ‘real deal’.
Mateus Fernandes can make Arsenal stronger
Fernandes was predominantly used as a central midfielder for West Ham last season but can play in a more attacking role, as well as a defensive one too.
Declan Rice is one of the first names on the team-sheet at Arsenal but there is room for Fernandes to force his way into Mikel Arteta’s starting XI, if the Gunners make a move.
Martin Zubimendi impressed during the first half of the campaign but his performances started to drop off in the final months. Martin Odegaard is captain at Arsenal but the Norwegian has been troubled by persistent injury problems.
Arsenal will be keen to build on their Premier League title win and go one better in the Champions League after losing to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties last weekend.
Fernandes might not start every game if he moved to the Emirates Stadium but he would give Arteta an incredibly-strong rotation option who can play in any position in Arsenal’s midfield three.
If the Gunners want to retain their title and challenge on more fronts, having two quality players in almost every position will give them the best chance of winning more trophies next term.

Kyle Walker Names 3 Players Tuchel Should’ve Included in England’s World Cup Squad
Former England international Kyle Walker has named the three players that Thomas Tuchel should’ve named in his squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Tuchel named his 26-man England squad at the end of May. The likes of Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice were among the players named in a hugely talented group.
The German left out some big names from his side. Some old heads that have been integral for England over the past decade were omitted, as were some younger players despite impressive campaigns.
Walker, capped 96 times by his country, will also not travel to North America after announcing his retirement from international football earlier this year.
Walker Names 3 English Players That He Would Have Taken to the World Cup
Walker has joined The Sun as a columnist and pundit for its coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He has now revealed three stars he would have picked for the World Cup if he was Three Lions boss. Speaking at a special show for The Sun previewing this summer’s tournament, Walker said:
“I probably would have taken Morgan Gibbs-White. He’s been fantastic for Forest.”
Gibbs-White was controversially left out of Tuchel’s side despite a superb campaign with Nottingham Forest. He scored 15 times and recorded seven assists in the Premier League for the Tricky Trees last season.
Walker, now 36 years old, also said that Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw should’ve been included in defence. He added:
“I come back to the defence. I do think there’s a lot there that have probably not played too great or who are carrying injuries that, can you completely rely on for the stretch of the tournament? That’s where I probably question some of them, but I’m not the manager.
“A fit Reece James is the best right-back in the world, for me. But can he (stay fit)? I think (John Stones) is a tremendous player. John’s problem is keeping fit.
“Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw have probably had the best seasons for Manchester United in a long time and are now not at the tournament. I do think Luke Shaw, for me, should have been on the plane and I do think Harry Maguire should have been on the plane.”
Shaw played every match in the Premier League this season, while Maguire was excluded from Tuchel’s side despite an impressive campaign at the heart of United’s defence.
Maguire said he was ‘shocked’ and gutted’ after learning he had been left out.
Kyle Walker Gives Take on Phil Foden’s Omission
Phil Foden was also a controversial omission from Tuchel. Walker stopped short from saying he would’ve taken his former teammate to the World Cup.
He said: “I really like Phil Foden. I’ve played with him for eight years, but he’s not on the plane.
“The players the manager has picked, he’s had the tough decision of picking 26 players to go on that plane and we have to trust in him that they are the right ones.
“It’s football. What do you do, sulk and cry in the corner, or work harder? think that in life there’s always setbacks, especially in football. It’s about how Phil bounces back now. You can’t affect that, that’s gone.
“He just needs to make sure that come the start of the new season, whoever the new manager will be for Manchester City now Pep has left, he puts his best foot forward and makes sure that he is the first name on the team sheet.”
England kickstart their World Cup campaign against Croatia on June 17. Matches against Ghana on June 23 and Panama on June 27 follow.
