Most Controversial Athletes of All Time Named and Ranked
Sport has always had its controversies, and in many cases, they are impossible to ignore. Whether it’s rule-breaking within the competition or serious issues away from it, these moments often leave a lasting mark on both the athlete and the sport itself.
Some incidents raise questions about integrity, others go far beyond that, involving behaviour that brings genuine consequences and a wealth of public criticism.
What has changed is the speed and scale at which these stories unfold. In the age of social media, controversies are no longer confined to headlines the next day, they break instantly and spread everywhere. That visibility does not excuse what happens, but it does ensure that nothing is easily forgotten.
We asked ChatGPT to put together a list of 20 athletes whose names became tied to major controversy, not to excuse or soften what happened, but to recognise how those moments have come to define their place in sporting history.

Floyd Mayweather Jr.
“Unbeaten champion with repeated legal issues, including domestic violence cases.”
There is something almost calculated about how Floyd Mayweather Jr. exists within controversy. Inside the ring, he was untouchable, a master of control who built an unbeaten record through precision and intelligence rather than chaos. Outside of it, however, his life has been repeatedly defined by legal issues, particularly surrounding domestic violence.
Mayweather has often used his larger-than-life persona and constant presence in the headlines to his advantage, turning attention, both positive and negative, into financial gain. He understood the value of being talked about, even if that conversation was uncomfortable.
It leaves behind a legacy that feels deliberately conflicted, greatness that cannot be discussed without acknowledging the weight of his actions beyond boxing.

Oscar Pistorius
“Once inspirational, later convicted of murdering his girlfriend.”
Few falls from grace have been as sudden or as jarring as that of Oscar Pistorius. He was not just an athlete, he was a symbol, representing possibility and progress as he competed as a double-leg amputee against able-bodied runners at the 2012 London Olympics. That is what made the events of 2013 so difficult to process.
The shooting of his then girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, and the lengthy, highly publicised trial that followed in South Africa, reshaped his story entirely. Pistorius’ initial conviction was on the grounds of manslaughter, which was eventually upgraded to murder in 2014, and in 2017, he was handed a 13-year prison sentence.
What had once been inspirational became tragic, then deeply unsettling. Pistorius’ legacy now exists in two parts that cannot be separated, one of achievement and one of irreversible consequence.

Ben Johnson
“Disqualified after winning Olympic gold in 1988 due to doping, one of the most shocking moments in athletics.”
Ben Johnson wasn’t the first Olympic athlete to use performance-enhancing drugs, but his case became a defining moment in sporting history. Winning the 100m at the Seoul Olympics in world record time should have cemented him as a hero, yet just a few days later he tested positive for steroids and was stripped of his medal and the world record, all before Seoul had even conducted the closing ceremony.
The scale of the shock came from the setting, the Olympic spotlight, and the immediacy of his fall from glory. Beyond Johnson himself, the scandal exposed the widespread use of performance-enhancing drugs in athletics, making him a symbol of both individual wrongdoing and a deeper, sport-wide problem.
7
Barry Bonds
“MLB’s home run king whose legacy is overshadowed by steroid allegations.”
Barry Bonds was simply untouchable on a baseball field. He didn’t just break the all-time home run record, he smashed it, finishing his career with 762 homers, and his single-season record of 73 is still too much for the likes of Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani to beat.
Pitchers and coaches feared him so much that he was intentionally walked 688 times, a number that tells you everything about how dominant and intimidating he was. Yet, behind the awe, there was controversy.
Bonds’ connection to performance-enhancing drugs cast a long shadow over his achievements, keeping him out of the Hall of Fame and leaving his legacy in constant debate. The brilliance was real, the fear was real, and the records still stand. MLB recognises them, but the steroid allegations keep fans debating whether they should still be there. Bonds’ career lives in that tension, unmatched dominance shadowed by controversy.
6
Tonya Harding
“Linked to the attack on rival Nancy Kerrigan in one of sport’s most bizarre scandals.”
Tonya Harding’s career is forever tied to one of the strangest episodes in Olympic history. In 1994, Nancy Kerrigan was struck on the knee by an assailant hired by Harding’s ex-husband and bodyguard, leaving her injured just before the Winter Olympics. Remarkably, Kerrigan recovered in time to win silver, while Harding finished eighth, her reputation shattered.
Harding denied planning the attack, but her involvement led to a $160,000 fine, three years’ probation, and 500 hours of community service under a plea deal. The incident became a household story, inspiring the film “I, Tonya”, which explored her life beyond the scandal. What remains is a story of rivalry, desperation, and a career undone by choices that crossed a line no one imagined.
5
Tiger Woods
“Career shaken by a massive personal scandal involving infidelity and public fallout.”
Tiger Woods didn’t just dominate golf; he became the greatest the sport has ever seen and a global figure whose fame extended far beyond his record 82 PGA Tour wins (shared with Sam Snead). That is why the events of 2009 hit so hard.
Revelations about his personal life shattered an image built over years of dominance, sponsors pulled back, his form suffered, and the aura surrounding him faded. The controversy wasn’t done there though. In 2017, he was found on a roadside asleep at the wheel by police, which resulted in an arrest for DUI and his mugshot going viral. His return to win The Masters in 2019 didn’t erase the past, but reframed it, adding resilience to a story that at one point was defined by perfection.
But sadly, more driving-related incidents have followed, one in 2021 in California that almost cost him his career and right leg, and in more recent days, a rollover crash in Florida near his home that led to another DUI arrest, all attributed to medication he’s been taking in an effort to get back to regular professional golf. Woods has recently declared that he is once again stepping back from golf and will not play this year’s Masters.
4
Mike Tyson
“Convicted of rape, involved in multiple violent incidents, including biting Evander Holyfield’s ear.”
Iron Mike Tyson’s life has never followed a straight line. His rise was explosive, becoming the youngest heavyweight champion in history with a style that felt almost primal in its intensity. But that same volatility defined his life outside the ring.
His 1992 conviction for rape remains one of the most serious and damaging aspects of his legacy. Then came the infamous bite on Evander Holyfield’s ear, a shocking moment that cemented him as unpredictable and dangerous. Today, Tyson is also a figure of popularity and curiosity, appearing in films, documentaries, podcasts, and even stepping back into the ring for a high-profile bout with Jake Paul. His story, full of triumph, controversy, reinvention, and public fascination, is exactly what makes him unforgettable.
3
Diego Maradona
“A genius on the pitch, but plagued by drug abuse, political controversy, and the infamous “Hand of God” goal.”
The late Diego Maradona was football at its most brilliant and most flawed. On the pitch, he was a magician, capable of moments of pure genius that could turn a game in an instant. Yet, his career was never without scandal or issue.
From the infamous “Hand of God” goal at the 1986 World Cup to repeated struggles with drug use, Maradona’s life seemed constantly at the borders of talent and trouble. He battled addiction, clashed with authorities, and became embroiled in political and personal scandals, all while carrying the hopes of a nation on his shoulders.
Even after his death, his influence on the game is undeniable, and his name still evokes awe and debate in equal measure. Maradona’s story is one of brilliance marred by chaos, sometimes putting into perspective how closely genius and controversy can sit side by side.
2
Lance Armstrong
“Stripped of 7 Tour de France titles after one of the biggest doping scandals in sports history.”
Lance Armstrong’s story once felt almost too powerful to question. A cancer survivor who went on to dominate cycling’s most gruelling race, he became a symbol of resilience and determination around the world. That is what made the truth so hard to accept.
When doping revelations came to light in 2012, they didn’t just dismantle his victories, they dismantled the story millions had believed in. Being stripped of seven Tour de France titles was unprecedented, but the deeper shock came from the betrayal of trust.
Armstrong had built an image of unbreakable perseverance, only for it to collapse under the weight of his own actions. His career serves as a cautionary tale about hero worship, ambition, and the cost of crossing such a line.
1
O. J. Simpson
“Arguably the most infamous athlete ever due to his 1995 murder trial, which became a global media spectacle.”
O.J. Simpson was a man of contrasts. On the football field, he was a superstar, thrilling NFL fans with his speed, power, and charisma, becoming one of the most recognisable athletes of his era. Off the field, his life was far more complicated.
The 1994 murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman plunged him into a legal battle that captivated the globe. His acquittal stunned the public, leaving many torn between admiration for his talent and shock at the events that defined him.
The story took another surreal turn with the televised Bronco police chase, watched live by millions. Later years brought further legal troubles and a conviction for armed robbery.
Simpson’s story is one of extremes, extraordinary athletic brilliance shadowed by personal and legal controversies, showing how fame and choices can collide in dramatic fashion.

Iran’s Mohammad Mohebi Explains Controversial World Cup Goal Celebration
Iran footballer Mohammad Mohebi has spoken out after being accused of a controversial World Cup goal celebration after scoring against New Zealand on Monday.
Mohebi, who plies his trade with FC Rostov in the Russian Premier League, scored Iran’s second goal in a 2-2 draw with New Zealand at the Los Angeles Stadium in California.
Elijah Just scored twice for New Zealand, either side of half-time, but the All Whites were pegged back on both occasions.
There was controversy before kick-off, with protests taking place outside the stadium, and a mixed response to Iran’s national anthem comprised of boos, whistles and cheers.
FIFA’s World Cup rule was also defied after world football’s governing body had successfully won a case to ban flags with the pre-revolution ‘Lion and Sun’ emblem on. Many of these ‘banned’ flags were seen in and around the stadium.

Mohebi Goal Celebration Sparks Outrage
There was further controversy during the match after Mohebi scored Iran’s second equaliser of the night.
The 27-year-old has sparked outrage with a ‘gun’ celebration in which he was seen holding out two fingers, initially pointing them to the ground before waving them in the air. Watch the footage below:
Many fans have called on FIFA to examine the gesture more closely, per The Express, with the celebration coming under particular scrutiny due to the sensitivity surrounding Iran’s participation in the tournament on US soil.
Amid the backlash, Mohebi has now spoken out to offer his version of events.
“First, I wanted to say thank you to all the Iranian fans that came to watch in Los Angeles. They made a great atmosphere in the game,” the Iran international said, per The Mirror.
“The celebration was just coming in the mind, in the moment. I do it like this [gestures with his hands] and I wanted to do it like this for all the fans. It’s just a celebration you know, and that’s it.”

Ramin Rezaeian Explains His Own Goal Celebration
Mohebi’s teammate Ramin Rezaeian netted Iran’s first goal of the 2026 World Cup in the 32nd minute.
The 36-year-old, who pulled his shirt over his face, acknowledged that his own celebration carried a political message.
“It’s something political (his goal celebration),” he said. “I don’t want to talk about that. We are here to answer football questions. If there is a problem between us (the Iranian people), it is between us.”
Iran face Belgium in their second Group G fixture on June 21 before going head-to-head with Egypt five days later.

Roberto De Zerbi Makes Decision On Selling Destiny Udogie
Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi has made a decision on the future of defender Destiny Udogie, according to TeamTalk, as he continues to be linked with a potential transfer away from the club.
It comes as the head coach oversees an important summer transfer window, where plenty of changes are expected across the whole Spurs squad.
Two signings have already been completed, while a third and fourth could follow, with talks ongoing for Jan Paul van Hecke and Savinho from Brighton and Manchester City respectively.
While the focus is understandably on the potential signings, there will be some huge exits on the cards, with doubts swirling over the future of Udogie.
While links persist over the left-back, De Zerbi has seemingly made a decision on Tottenham sanctioning a sale of the Italian.
Destiny Udogie Transfer Update
As Udogie continues to be linked with a move away from Tottenham, TeamTalk reports that head coach De Zerbi has made it clear that he doesn’t want to sell the 23-year-old this summer.
It’s claimed that Spurs have made it clear to suitors that they won’t entertain offers for the defender in the market, with Serie A clubs lining up to try and tempt the star across.
Both Juventus and Fiorentina have enquired about Udogie’s availability, with Tottenham standing firm on their belief that he will be a key player for De Zerbi in the future.
That’s not to suggest a move would be totally off the cards, with the report adding that an offer in the £50 million range would have to be placed to even tempt Spurs to reconsider their position, though even that may not be enough to force a deal.
With that in mind, Tottenham have already held internal discussions over an improved contract for the defender, to keep him for the long-term future.

Udogie’s Injury Battles
At his best, Udogie is one of Tottenham’s most dangerous outlets. The full-back transformed the team when he arrived under Ange Postecoglou, and he continues to show glimpses of that quality.
Thomas Frank called him “exceptional” during his time as manager, but there have been issues in getting the star player on the pitch regularly.
Over the past season, there have been five separate injuries for Udogie, which saw him miss 20 matches across all competitions as he looked to recover.
It shows that the main battle for him moving forward is to become fit enough to start more regularly, justifying Tottenham’s stance in keeping him.
Contact Made: Tottenham Try to Hijack Man Utd Transfer for ‘Elite’ Star
Tottenham are looking to strengthen their midfield in this summer transfer window
With the signing of Andy Robertson, there is some extra reinforcement at left-back, which should give him the best chance possible of recovering.
It remains to be seen whether the campaign will be one for him to turn his fortunes around.

Liverpool Battle For Nico Schlotterbeck Transfer Heats Up
Liverpool are facing a battle to land one of their key transfer targets this summer, as Mundo Deportivo reports that Real Madrid are growing in confidence in their hopes of signing the defender instead.
It comes as the Reds continue to be linked with centre-back options in the transfer market, as the club hope to future proof the position in the coming weeks.
Ibrahima Konate’s exit as a free agent has thrown out a potential issue in the backline, with the 27-year-old failing to agree a deal and making the move to Real Madrid instead.
The arrival of Jeremy Jacquet, boosted by the return of Giovanni Leoni from injury, means that there are options to pair with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez in the backline.
However, as the latter pair only have one year remaining on their contracts, there may be concerns for next year and beyond, as links continue for another centre-back to join the club this summer.
Nico Schlotterbeck Transfer Latest
Liverpool have been linked with a move for Nico Schlotterbeck this summer, as the defender could be on the move in the transfer market.
It’s not the first time the Reds have shown interest in the Germany international, who could be available for roughly £50 million due to a release clause in his contract.
The deal signed at Borussia Dortmund includes the clause, but it can only be triggered by certain clubs, and it’s unclear whether Liverpool are one of those included.
One team who are certainly included are Real Madrid, as they have appeared as an option for the 26-year-old, who has been described as “elite” through his performances.
And even though Los Blancos are set to confirm Konate as a signing, the old foe are set to impact Liverpool further as the report from Mundo Deportivo claims that Schlotterbeck is a “strong contender” to be the club’s next signing.
Jose Mourinho, who also had his fair share of scrapes with Liverpool, is claimed to be keen on the centre-back and could deal a blow to the Reds in the process.
It remains to be seen whether the battle will heat up with concrete offers in the coming weeks, but Iraola’s side may need to start positioning themselves for a move to get a deal done quickly.

Liverpool Defender Priority
Liverpool have a balancing act that comes with their business in the summer transfer window, as they must weigh up the need to improve the squad for this coming season, as well as looking beyond the campaign to the future.
As it stands, the need for a defender is further down in the pecking order, with sufficient depth within the team for at least next season.
The forward ranks remain the most pressing concern, as talks continue to sign Yan Diomande for the right wing, while interest persists over other options up front.
Then attention could switch to the midfield, with interest in Alex Scott among other players such as Adam Wharton for the centre of the pitch.
Deal Agreed: Liverpool Set to Seal Signing of World Cup Star
Liverpool appear to be closing in on a surprise transfer this summer to bolster Andoni Iraola’s forward options.
Only once those areas are sorted should Liverpool look to fix the centre-back position, adding a long-term option to replace Van Dijk at the end of his deal, with the quality to do so almost immediately.
It remains to be seen whether that possibility will come about, given the funds required for stars such as Schlotterbeck, on top of the other signings.
