2027: ADC tells Tinubu why he should be worried

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has responded to remarks by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that he cannot be intimidated by opposition figures, outlining reasons it believes the president should be concerned ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement, the party said Tinubu’s comments reflected anxiety rather than confidence, citing worsening economic and security conditions across the country.
“What Nigerians saw was not the confidence of a leader in control. It was the anxiety of a President increasingly disconnected from the reality of hardship, insecurity, and frustration facing millions of citizens,” the statement read.
The ADC accused the president of focusing on political rhetoric instead of addressing pressing national issues.
“At a time when families are battling a historic cost-of-living crisis, food inflation, rising debt burdens, and collapsing purchasing power, the President chose to mock the opposition instead of addressing the suffering of Nigerians,” it said.
The party also referenced recent insecurity incidents, including reports of abductions, to underscore its concerns.
“Even as he spoke, reports of children being abducted from examination centres were circulating. This is the reality of today’s Nigeria, insecurity spreading deeper into everyday life while government appears distracted,” it stated.
According to the ADC, these challenges are reasons the president should be worried about his political future.
“These are the reasons he should be scared, because the people are determined to vote him out,” the party added.
The opposition party further rejected claims surrounding its national convention, insisting it was conducted properly and dismissing suggestions of irregularities.
“We did not hold our convention on the street. If that was the story supplied to the President by agents of disruption, then he has been misinformed,” it said.
It also accused the administration of restricting democratic space, alleging that opposition parties have faced difficulties accessing public venues.
“No government before now had denied political parties fair access to public venues such as Eagle Square, a national civic ground that belongs to all Nigerians,” the statement read.
The ADC also criticised what it described as executive interference in other arms of government.
“The President also cannot preach separation of powers while simultaneously assuming the role of interpreter of the law, political referee, and commentator on judicial matters,” it said, adding that “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu cannot be a President and a judge at the same time.”
The party maintained that Nigeria’s challenges remain unresolved, stating that “hardship is rising, insecurity is worsening, debt is mounting, and hope is fading,” while reaffirming its commitment to providing an alternative platform for Nigerians ahead of the next general election.

PDP Crisis: Wabara, Babangida Aliyu, Jerry Gana, others sue INEC, seek recognition

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party, led by Adolphus Wabara, has instituted a suit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), seeking recognition of the party’s interim National Working Committee (NWC).
In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1159/2026 and filed on June 4 at the Federal High Court, Abuja, the plaintiffs are asking the court to compel INEC to update its records and publish on its official website the names of the interim NWC members forwarded to the commission by the PDP’s BoT and National Executive Committee (NEC).
The plaintiffs include Wabara, former Niger State Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu, former Information Minister Jerry Gana, PDP chieftain Olabode George, former ministers Maryam Ciroma and Zainab Maina, as well as BoT member Esther Uduehi. INEC is the sole defendant in the suit.
The legal action comes days after the Court of Appeal set aside key aspects of a Federal High Court judgment delivered in Ibadan that had recognised a factional caretaker committee within the PDP.
In a unanimous judgment delivered on June 3, the appellate court held that the trial court granted reliefs that were not sought by any of the parties in the dispute arising from the PDP leadership crisis. The court faulted the lower court for going beyond the issues presented before it.
The plaintiffs are seeking declarations that INEC is constitutionally bound to enforce and give effect to several court judgments, including decisions of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Nigeria, relating to the party’s leadership dispute.
They are also asking the court to direct INEC to accept and act on all official communications, notices and engagements from the interim NWC constituted by the PDP’s BoT and NEC.
In an affidavit supporting the suit, Aliyu stated that several key party officials, including former National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, were suspended by the party’s NWC in November 2025 over allegations of misconduct, anti-party activities and insubordination.
According to him, the suspensions were upheld through subsequent court proceedings, while judicial decisions also nullified the PDP’s national convention held in November 2025.
Aliyu said that following the judgments, which created vacancies in the party’s leadership structure, the BoT constituted an interim NWC to oversee the affairs of the PDP pending the conduct of a valid national convention.
He stated that details of the interim NWC and subsequent portfolio assignments were communicated to INEC through letters sent in May 2026. However, he alleged that the commission had failed to update its records or accord recognition to the committee despite receiving the correspondence.
Aliyu argued that INEC has a constitutional obligation to comply with valid and subsisting court judgments and urged the court to compel the commission to recognise the interim leadership structure.
The suit had not been assigned to a judge at the time of filing.

Peter Obi: ‘Nobody will cause problems between me, my boss’ – Datti Ahmed
Former vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Datti Baba Ahmed has warned critics against causing issues between him and the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi.
Datti spoke in an interview with Channels TV on Sunday while responding to criticism that he was unable to win his ward and Local Government for the Labour Party in 2023.
He said Obi, who was the presidential candidate of the LP in 2023, remains in his list of respected politicians.
According to Datti, though they have both parted and are now in different political parties, they have mutual respect for each other.
He said, “Nobody will cause a problem between me and my boss, Peter Obi. We can be in different parties today but I still have respect for him as someone who governed and someone who doesn’t give shishi.
“Peter Obi and I have mutual respect for each other, so nobody will come between us”.

Lagos 2027: ADC chairmen urge NWC to respect governorship primary outcome
Chairmen of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, across local government areas in Lagos State have called on the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, to respect the outcome of the party’s governorship primary and uphold the wishes of members.
The appeal was contained in a communiqué issued after a meeting of the Forum of Local Government Area Chairmen of the ADC in Lagos State.
The statement, signed by the forum’s Chairman, Anaere Ugochukwu, and Secretary, Oluwabukola Okeowo, alleged attempts to override the choice made by party members during the governorship primary process.
The forum expressed confidence in the leadership of the Lagos State ADC Chairman, George Ashiru, as well as members of the State Executive Committee, commending their role in managing the affairs of the party.
According to the chairmen, the credibility and growth of any political party depend largely on its commitment to internal democracy and respect for the decisions of its members.
They maintained that votes cast by party faithful should remain the ultimate determinant of candidate selection and should not be replaced by actions capable of undermining members’ confidence in the party.
“As leaders at the grassroots, we believe the strength and integrity of any political party are rooted in adherence to democratic values. The collective decision of members must be respected at all times,” the communiqué stated.
The forum argued that the ADC’s prospects in future elections would depend significantly on the trust and confidence of its members and supporters across the state.
It urged the party’s national leadership to carefully examine concerns surrounding the Lagos governorship primary and ensure that any decision taken aligns with the party’s constitution and democratic ideals.
The chairmen warned that actions perceived as disregarding the wishes of party members could weaken the party’s grassroots support base and affect its electoral fortunes.
They further appealed to the National Secretariat and the NWC to allow the mandate freely given by members during the primary election to stand, describing it as the best route to preserving unity and stability within the party.
According to the forum, respecting the outcome of the primary would strengthen the ADC’s chances of emerging as a major political force in Lagos State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group added that adherence to democratic principles remains essential if the party hopes to consolidate its growing support and position itself for electoral success in the state.
