Charles Barkley Ranked His 10 Greatest NBA Players in History

Published

on

The NBA has long been home to some of the most gifted athletes basketball has ever produced, and across every era the league has showcased dominant centers, dazzling guards, prolific scorers, and defensive masterminds.

One player who unquestionably belongs in discussions surrounding the NBA’s all-time greats is Charles Barkley. The former Philadelphia 76ers and Phoenix Suns superstar has become a fan-favourite thanks to his role on TNT’s Inside the NBA, where his unfiltered opinions and self-deprecating humour have made him one of basketball’s most entertaining personalities.

At times, though, Barkley’s media success can overshadow just how dominant he was as a player during the late 1980s and 1990s. Despite standing only 6-foot-6, Barkley routinely battled with much bigger forwards and centers, earning the NBA MVP award in 1993 with Phoenix. He was also selected to the All-NBA First Team five times, including four consecutive appearances beginning in 1988.

Even with all of his accomplishments, Barkley has previously admitted he does not place himself among the very top names in NBA history. Speaking alongside former players Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, Barkley revealed his personal top 10 NBA players of all time, and several legendary figures surprisingly failed to make the cut.

10

Jerry West

Jerry West

Jerry West remains one of the defining figures in NBA history and is widely viewed as one of the greatest point guards ever. Forever connected with the Los Angeles Lakers, West excelled not only as a player, but later as a coach and executive as well.

During his playing days, West earned 14 All-Star selections and captured his lone NBA championship in 1972. His influence on the game was so significant that he remains one of the few players to win Finals MVP honours despite ending up on the losing side of the series.

Hakeem Olajuwon

Hakeem Olajuwon

A dominant center who led the Houston Rockets to back-to-back championships in the mid-1990s, Hakeem Olajuwon was a nightmare match-up on both offence and defence. Whether he was rejecting shots with perfect timing or dazzling defenders with his iconic footwork in the post, Olajuwon possessed one of the most complete skill sets ever seen from a big man.

25 Greatest NBA Players of All Time (Ranked)

The National Basketball Association has seen dozens of stellar players over the years, but which 20 players have been the absolute best?

It speaks volumes about ‘The Dream’ that he is remembered not only as one of basketball’s greatest overall talents, but also as one of the finest defenders in league history.

8

Tim Duncan

Tim Duncan Spurs

In a career that took him from the 1990s, the 2000s, and then the 2010s, Tim Duncan had an important role in much of the San Antonio Spurs’ legendary success over the three decades that he competed in. Widely regarded as one of the best power forwards of all time, if not the best, Duncan combined his incredible IQ for the game with a genuinely good touch out of the post.

Whether he was leading from the front, or deferring to some of his superstar teammates and simply doing what was needed, Duncan was the ultimate glue that held everything together for the Spurs even despite their different iterations and eras of the team.

7

LeBron James

LeBron James Lakers

In one of the big shocks of Barkley’s ranking, LeBron James comes in at no.7 on his all-time list. The Los Angeles Lakers star often comes up in the GOAT conversations alongside Michael Jordan, but for Barkley, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

“I love LeBron, but the difference, in my opinion, is Michael and Kobe will kill you. LeBron is a nice guy. Ain’t nobody ever said Kobe and Michael were nice guys. Those words have never been spoken. Nobody ever said, ‘Man, Michael Jordan is a nice guy.’ The same thing with Kobe. And that’s nothing wrong with that, but LeBron, he is just a nice man and I got him seventh.”

6

Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bryant

Ahead of LeBron James comes Los Angeles Lakers icon Kobe Bryant. The Black Mamba had the same kind of elite, win-at-all-costs mentality that made Michael Jordan great, and it was perhaps no surprise that the latter seemed to respect Bryant a lot when the two shared the same court during the late ’90s and early 2000s.

AI Names & Ranks 10 Greatest NBA Players in History

ChatGPT has had its say and has ranked the 10 greatest NBA players of all time.

A man who would often step up in the playoffs, Bryant’s peak carried the Lakers to titles and an MVP award. Having seen Shaquille O’Neal take the Finals MVP award for each season of their three-peat at the turn of the century, Bryant came into his own once Big Diesel had left.

5

Bill Russell

Bill Russell

The most successful player in NBA history, Bill Russell’s haul of championships will likely never be touched again. In the argument for the best player to put on a Boston Celtics jersey, Russell and his teammates would dominate the NBA during their legendary run.

An 11-time champion, Russell is one of only eight players to have achieved the Triple Crown – winning the NCAA championship, the NBA title, and Olympic Gold. A five-time MVP, Russell’s greatness on the court was matched off it, and his work in trying to ensure greater equality for African Americans in a time of deep discontent was nothing short of extraordinary.

4

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Milwaukee Bucks

Until he was passed by LeBron James, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar held the record for the most points in NBA history. The master of the ‘sky-hook shot’, the Los Angeles Lakers legend was an unstoppable force from the post for much of his incredible career. With a record six NBA MVP awards to his name – one more than Michael Jordan – Abdul-Jabbar is mostly recognised for his achievements with the Lakers, but his time with the Milwaukee Bucks should not be forgotten either.

He won the title, MVP, and Finals MVP award with the Bucks in 1971, while he was also named to the All-NBA First Team and NBA All-Defensive Second team too that year – what perhaps makes it even more remarkable, is that his achievements in 1971 came just two years after he came into the league.

3

Wilt Chamberlain

Wilt Chamberlain

In third place, and in Barkley’s eyes, the greatest center of all time, comes Wilt Chamberlain. While Chamberlain may have lost numerous potential NBA titles to his perennial rival at the time, Bill Russell, there’s no questioning the greatness that the giant center achieved during his time in the league.

LeBron James

Basketball: LeBron James’ All-Time Dream NBA Starting 5

There was no room for Magic Johnson or Kobe Bryant in the King’s all-time starting 5.

The only man to have scored 100 points in a game, Chamberlain is said to hold a total of 72 records in the NBA, while some of his eye-catching statistics include registering 55 rebounds in a contest and never fouling out. Chamberlain’s legacy may well be tied to Russell and his losing battle in terms of the number of championships won by either man, but their rivalry has stood the test of time and is an indication of just how great they both were.

2

Oscar Robertson

Oscar Robertson, Cincinnati Royals

Much like the conclusion drawn with Wilt Chamberlain, Barkley ranking Oscar Robertson as the second-greatest player of all time, means he considers him the best point guard in NBA history. In GIVEMESPORT’s list of the best PGs of all time, Magic Johnson takes top spot, and it is intriguing to see that the Los Angeles Lakers star misses out completely on Barkley’s list.

However, that is not to disrespect the incredible player and Hall of Famer that Robertson is in his own right. The NBA’s MVP in 1964, Robertson was voted in as an All-Star on 12 separate occasions, while he was named to the All-NBA First Team an impressive nine times too.

His one championship came with the Milwaukee Bucks in 1971 when he was playing alongside Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, while one of his most astonishing achievements was averaging a triple double over an entire season in 1962. He was the first player in NBA history to do so until Russell Westbrook and Nikola Jokic joined him in the 21st century.

1

Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan-2

The greatest of all-time for Shaquille O’Neal, as well as for Barkley, Michael Jordan’s accomplishments in the 1990s beggars belief. A multiple-time MVP and multiple-time champion, Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to unprecedented success.

Speaking after watching The Last Dance documentary, Barkley admitted his admiration for Jordan only increased after seeing what he had to contend with, particularly during his early years in the league in the late 1980s.

“Those boys were really out to hurt people. Then you saw in the playoffs; when I watched that Last Dance — some of those fouls they were doing, you would get suspended multiple games today if you hit people like that. And those were just like common fouls. The Pistons had so many big bodies. They had [Bill] Laimbeer, [Rick] Mahorn, [John] Sally, [Dennis] Rodman, James Edwards, so they were using all six of their fouls. The one thing I admire about Michael, he just kept getting bigger and stronger.”

Man Utd Pull Out of Move to Sign Elliot Anderson

Published

Manchester United have pulled out of a potential move to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson following a big U-turn, according to the Mirror.

Man United have made strengthening their central midfield the priority this summer, with one report suggesting they could look to bring in three new players for the position, if Manuel Ugarte joins Casemiro in leaving the club.

The Red Devils want to bring in a top-class replacement for the Brazilian, while two lower-cost options could arrive at Old Trafford in the coming months to boost a squad that will be playing Champions League football for the first time since the 2023-24 campaign.

United had identified Anderson as their number one target for the midfield position, according to GIVEMESPORT sources, following an outstanding season for Forest which has culminated in him becoming a regular England starter ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America.

The chances of the 23-year-old still being at the City Ground appear to be diminishing as his stock continues to rise, although it is also looking like he won’t be wearing a red shirt at Old Trafford next term either.

According to the Mirror, Manchester United chiefs are not willing to meet Forest’s £100m valuation of their top summer target, even though he is a player they really want.

The price tag isn’t the only reason for the Red Devils walking away from a move though, with club chiefs believing that the ‘elite’ Three Lions star would prefer to join Manchester City instead of them.

The Premier League runners-up are said to be confident they will land Anderson, despite the fact that Pep Guardiola is set to be replaced by Enzo Maresca at the Etihad Stadium this summer.

The Italian has given the green light to bring the former Newcastle United star to the club as one of his first signings.

Who Could Man United Sign Instead?

With a deal for Anderson off the table, United now have to look elsewhere to complete their midfield rebuild.

Reports on Wednesday afternoon suggest they have agreed a £38m deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta, with an agreement on personal terms with the Brazilian already reached, according to GMS sources.

Two more players could arrive though, with a report in Italy suggesting that Michael Carrick has told the club to sign Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali too, with the 26-year-old one of the best in his position in the Premier League.

The Italy international won’t come on the cheap though, with the Magpies said to value him at up to €100m (£86m).

The Red Devils will look at another low-cost option too, with three Championship players among those linked.

Southampton’s Shea Charles and Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney have been mentioned, along with the recently-relegated Mateus Fernandes of West Ham United.

The Mirror claim that Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Brighton and Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba and Real Madrid duo Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde are also on their shortlist.

Anthony Gordon’s Wage After Leaving Newcastle For Barcelona Emerges

Published

The summer transfer saga involving Anthony Gordon is already set to come to an end, after Newcastle United accepted a mega-money offer from Barcelona for the winger.

GIVEMESPORT sources understand a deal has been agreed worth in around £70m, plus a future sell-on clause for the England international, who will jet out to Spain to complete a medical before finalising a deal before the World Cup.

That’s despite major interest from Bayern Munich and Premier League clubs about a move, with Newcastle in a position where they were forced to listen to offers after a poor season in the Premier League meant they missed out on European football entirely.

Anthony Gordon Barcelona Contract Details Revealed

According to The Chronicle Live, the Magpies received two rival bids on Wednesday for the 25-year-old’s services – one from Barcelona, and one from Bayern Munich.

But the Bundesliga champions were blown out of the water, and refused to match Barcelona’s bid, which allowed the Catalan club to seal an agreement and get a deal over the line, with a deal worth £69.3m including add-ons.

It’s reported that Gordon has already said goodbye to his teammates, and in a stunning update, he is now set to see his wages doubled to around £300,000-a-week at the Camp Nou.

Gordon was left out of the Newcastle side since the clash with Crystal Palace back in April, with Eddie Howe admitting that they were ‘planning for the future’ with his absence. Now a deal has been agreed, and the club will get the financial injection they were looking for to help them bolster their own squad, while also hoping to keep hold of other stars.

Gordon One of England’s Highest-Paid Players

With Gordon set to earn around £300,000-a-week in Spain as part of his agreement with the club, he is expected to climb the list of England’s highest-paid players as a result.

Currently, the country’s top earner is Ivan Toney, who takes home a whopping £427,670-a-week from Saudi club Al-Ahli. His form has somewhat justified the money, netting an impressive 42 goals in 49 appearances, and earning a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup.

Behind him is Harry Kane, who earns £419,120-a-week at Bayern Munich, while Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham earns around £350,000-a-week in the Spanish capital. But Gordon would slot into the list just behind him, and alongside the likes of Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka once he puts pen to paper on his new deal.

Arsenal Set Gabriel Jesus Transfer Asking Price Amid Interest

Published

By

Arsenal have now set their asking price for Gabriel Jesus, with clubs opening talks to secure his signature, according to David Ornstein.

Jesus has struggled to be a regular starter for the Gunners of late, with Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres the favoured strikers for Mikel Arteta.

The Brazilian forward is set to be out of contract in 2027. Arsenal have to cash in soon if they are not going to tie him down to a new deal, or they risk losing him for nothing.

A move for Jesus in the summer transfer window would make sense, considering he’s almost certainly third choice in the pecking order.

Arsenal cashing in on him means they can hopefully make a little bit of money for the reinforcements while also saving plenty on their wage bill.

Arsenal Set Jesus Asking Price

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Arsenal will demand up to £20m for striker Jesus in the summer transfer window.

The report claims that multiple clubs have open talks to secure his signature, with his contract running down.

Jesus, who is believed to earn in the region of £265,000 a week, started just three times in the Premier League during the 2025-2026 season.

A departure in the upcoming window does now feel likely, as it certainly makes sense for all parties involved.

Jesus Could Return to Former Club

It’s unclear which clubs have made enquiries to sign Jesus ahead of the summer transfer window, but a return to Brazil could be on the cards, if not now, then certainly in the future.

Jesus previously stated that one day he would love to return to his home country to play for Palmeiras.

“People have asked, ‘Why don’t you just leave? Why don’t you go to Saudi? Or back home to Brazil?’ One day, I would love for everything to come full circle with Palmeiras, but not today. I feel that I have unfinished business at Arsenal. I don’t want to leave.”

Jesus was speaking back in December, but it will be interesting to see whether his stance has changed on a potential departure after struggling for minutes this season.
