Marshall Katung, Shehu Sani win APC Senatorial primaries in Kaduna

Senator Sunday Marshall Katung has emerged winner of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Kaduna South Senatorial District primary election, defeating former Senator Danjuma Tella Laah and Michael Auta in a keenly contested exercise held across the eight local government areas of the district.

The returning officer for the election, Prof. John Laah of the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia, announced the results at the collation centre at the Jema’a Local Government Secretariat on Monday, declaring the exercise free, fair and peaceful.

According to him, the election was conducted across Kagarko, Sanga, Kauru, Zangon Kataf, Kaura, Jema’a, Jaba and Kachia local government areas, with delegates casting their votes for the three aspirants.

Katung polled 7,453 votes, while Laah scored 1,370 votes and Michael Ayuba Auta came third with 878 votes.

Prof. Laah, while announcing the final figures, commended party stakeholders, security agencies and delegates for ensuring a peaceful and orderly process across the senatorial district.

With the result, Senator Katung has secured the APC ticket to represent Kaduna South Senatorial District in the forthcoming general election.

Speaking with journalists shortly after the announcement of results, the Executive Chairman of Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, Joseph Bege Gaiya, described the outcome as a true reflection of the wishes of the grassroots.

He said the conduct of the exercise and the eventual outcome demonstrated the strength of internal democracy within the party, stressing that the process had further reinforced public confidence in the political direction of the APC in the area.

Also, another returning officer, Samira Jibrin, announced the results of the Kaduna Central Senatorial election, with Shehu Sani scoring 9,105 votes to emerge winner.

Other contestants, Yusuf Zailani, scored 1,021 votes, while Shettima Yerima, who withdrew from the race, scored 1,253 votes.

Addressing journalists at his Kaduna home, Shehu Sani thanked President Bola Tinubu and Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani for their support.

“There is no better representation of the people of Kaduna State than me being their lawmaker and Uba Sani being the governor,” he said.

He also thanked his constituents for giving him the chance to represent them for a second time.

“I also thank Yerima Shettima for stepping down from the race. And those who did not step down, we should join hands to move the party forward,” he added.

He noted that many things were confronting the nation, including poverty and unemployment.

Katsina Reps member, Ahmed Doro defects from APC to PDP

The member representing Bindawa/Mani Federal Constituency of Katsina State in the House of Representatives, Ahmed Yusuf Doro, has defected from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The defection was announced during Thursday’s plenary after the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, read Doro’s letter notifying the House of his decision.

In the letter, dated July 18, 2026, the lawmaker said his decision followed extensive consultations with his constituents and careful consideration of what he described as the best path to strengthen service delivery and representation.

According to him, the move would enable him to better represent the interests of the people of Bindawa/Mani Federal Constituency while remaining committed to his legislative responsibilities in the 10th House of Representatives.

Doro also expressed appreciation to the leadership and members of the APC for their support during his time in the party.

He reaffirmed his commitment to providing effective representation and pursuing sustainable development for his constituency under his new political platform.

The lawmaker’s defection takes effect from July 18, 2026, in accordance with the notification submitted to the Speaker.

Osun poll: Accord Party, Police differ over officers’ neutrality

AHEAD of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State, the Accord Party and Police Command, yesterday, traded accusations over the neutrality of security agencies in the state.

The Chairman of the Accord Party, Pastor Victor Akande, accused the Osun Police Command of providing cover for suspected thugs, while members of rival groups, particularly transport union members, were subjected to harassment and selective arrests.

Akande urged the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, to order an impartial investigation into the activities of all individuals linked to the recent violence in the state and ensure that anyone found culpable was prosecuted regardless of political affiliation.

However, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, dismissed the allegations, describing them as false and misleading, maintaining that it remained committed to professionalism, impartiality and the rule of law.

He said it had never provided protection for any individual, political party or criminal group, stressing that its operations were intelligence-driven and based strictly on credible evidence.

Ojelabi said: “Arrests were not carried out based on media reports, political statements or social media allegations, but on evidence capable of sustaining prosecution in court. Several suspects linked to breaches of public peace had already been arrested, investigated and charged where sufficient evidence existed, while investigations into other reported incidents were ongoing.

“Some of the arrested suspects had confessed to plans to procure arms and ammunition to perpetrate further violence.”

State Police: Kwankwaso foresees danger ahead 2027 polls

The Vice Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, Rabiu Kwankwaso says there are dangers associated with the proposed creation of state police.

Speaking with News Central TV on Thursday night, the national leader of the Kwankwassiyya Movement said governors will use the local police for their political gains.

According to him, the state police would not have been needed if not for the leadership failure in the Northern part of the country.

He said, “There is a huge leadership failure in Northern Nigeria. State police is as a result of that failure.

“There are so many dangers associated with state police. The governors would want to use them for political protection.

“The government must not allow the circulation of small arms just like that”.
